EMC/EMI Filters and Harmonics

FILTERS

EMC/EMI filters (Electromagnetic Compatibility / Electromagnetic Interference) are components designed to suppress conducted or radiated interference that may affect the operation of electrical and electronic devices. They are composed of a combination of passive elements, such as inductors (coils) and capacitors, which form circuits with low impedance at desired frequencies and high impedance at unwanted frequencies.

HARMONICS Filters

Harmonics in an electrical network are waveform distortions in current or voltage caused by non-linear loads.

Odd harmonics, the most common type, are typically generated by devices such as variable frequency drives (VFDs), UPS systems, etc. Their effects include overheating, tripping of protection devices, and loss of efficiency.

Even harmonics, considered warning signals, are indicators of imbalance or internal faults. Their effects may appear as motor vibrations, transformer failures, or dielectric stress in insulation systems.

Operation:

They attenuate high-frequency noise present in power or signal lines.

They protect equipment against external disturbances and prevent the device from generating interference in its surroundings.

They operate in both directions:

Common mode (noise identical on both lines)

Differential mode (noise between lines)

Typical Applications:

Switched-mode power supplies

Industrial automation equipment

Control and communication systems

Medical and laboratory devices

Precision machinery
